Bilkis Bano, known popularly as Dadi (grandmother), is an 86-year-old woman who inspired protests in India against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC), both of which discriminate against Muslims. Her Gandhian style of protest attracted thousands of mainly Muslim women in the Delhi locality Shaheen Bagh and continued unabated for 100 days until a COVID-19 lockdown was enforced. The Indian governmentβs arrests and assaults on the protests are another front in the battle for Indiaβs soul (Gandhi vs RSS β Hindu Nationalism) and democracy.
